Anti-Jewish measures and Forbidden for Jews
In January 1941, the separation between Jews and non-Jews was implemented even more strictly. At cafés, swimming pools, sports fields, museums, zoos, libraries, theaters, markets and many other public places, there will be signs with the text "Forbidden to Jews". All Jews must report for registration. Almost everyone obeys. Because what happens if you refuse? And why would you not stand for your origin? Later registration makes it easier for the Germans to take measures against the Jews. The Jews had to surrender their money and their businesses were confiscated. At associations their memberships are terminated. In November 1941 they are no longer allowed to travel without permission.
Declining restrictive measures for the Jews was not enough, because in the middle of 1942 signs with the inscription "Forbidden to Jews" appeared. In Harlingen, too, such signs appeared here and there, including at the entrance to the Harmenspark, the English garden, the Balkland, the sports area at Vierkantsdijk and in a few more places. And the Harlinger hospitality industry was also obliged to place a sign with the text "Forbidden to Jews" in front of the window.  It was yet another humiliating measure that was introduced, because in 1942 the anti-Jewish measures had also followed each other at a rapid pace. For example, Jews were no longer allowed to drive a car, no longer have a bill at the post office, no longer rent bank vaults, no longer fish, no longer travel without prior permission, no longer buy fruit and vegetables in non-Jewish shops, their bicycles and other means of transport handing in, no longer practicing sport, no longer using public transport and from mid-July, Jews were only allowed to do their shopping between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and so on.
