USS Arkansas (BB-33) - American Wyoming-class battleship from World War I and II. She was the third ship in the history of the US Navy to bear the name of the State of Arkansas. Sunk as a target ship during the nuclear bomb tests in July 1946.
The last moments:
In 1946, it was decided to use the battleship as a target ship at the nuclear testing ground near the Bikini Atoll. The test code-named "Crossroads" was to consist of detonating two atomic charges. Arkansas was to be sunk in the first blast, codenamed "Able" on July 1, 1946. The ship survived the blast but sank in the explosion of a second bomb, code-named "Baker", dropped on July 25. He was removed from the fleet list on August 16, 1946.
Arkansas has been awarded four battle star decorations for its World War II service.
